"Now I see the secret of making the best person, it is to grow in the open air, and to eat and sleep with the earth."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson
See that quote up there?
Yeah, we did that, my lover and I.
I had been begging him to accompany me to a state park an hour and a half away. A state park that I had been known to (foolishly) cliff dive in when I was so much younger. So much less wise.
BUT, I digress, it was incredible and lovely; then and now,
Allow me to set the scene.
A perfect day in May, the first on fact. Beltane, as it is known. The exact halfway point between the spring equinox and the coming summer solstice; a wondrous pagan holiday meant to honor nature and all of her beauties. This day, on this year, delivers great justice to the term. The sky is blue with hardly a cloud in the sky, the sun is bolstering her way through the heavens in a perfect and comfortable heat. It's magic.
Even more so to be in a beautiful place.
A shut-ins sort of place, more specifically. A place in which there are incredibly hard rocks from volcanic eruptions long ago, carved smooth by millions of years of streams cascading upon them. A place where said water is positively rushing through the hard surfaces, a byproduct of the spring rainy season.
My lover and I, however, are downstream. We are where the river has calmed and could be mistaken for a wide creek.
Deep and blue, she humbles us from our nearby vantage point at a camp meant to be enjoyed by weary hikers passing through from the Ozark Trail.
We spent a few hours here, swaying on our hammocks in the light spring breeze. Link laid beside me and dug a small hole (as he often does when he's bored). It was the time of year where birds are singing and you really notice it, as they had been gone throughout the entire winter. It's like they welcome the sun in, ushering in a new season of adventure and happiness.
It was positively gorgeous, and it was one of those moments that I couldn't wait to write about; but was eager to savor and enjoy.
