Daisy Jones and The Six
"Daisy Jones is young, beautiful, talented and just beginning her ascent into music stardom when a producer pairs her up with The Six, an up-and-coming blues-rock band. Daisy Jones & the Six tells their story in all its unruly, sex-crazed, drug-fueled glory."
Daisy Jones and The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid is a deeply complex, thrilling read. I found myself really loving the characters, especially Daisy and Karen. They were the badass, progressive female leads that kept me on the edge of my seat.
Daisy was so volatile, yet deeply human. She was absolutely unashamed of herself, even her darkest qualities. She wore them, like a heart on her sleeve. This novel reminded me how unsustainable a party lifestyle as, and how much it clashes with the gross realities of adulthood and well.. real life. No amount of money can change that. Having experienced the dynamics of band culture myself, it was easy for me to relate to these characters.
They each had their own developing visions for the band, and only two of the seven members held any weight in their criticisms. Working so intimately with your closest friends can become, for lack of a better word, a drag. Feeling each of them slowly resent one another was so painful, but something that wasn't at all out of the ordinary for the situation. It was understandable, it tragically made sense.
Reading this novel is like watching, in real time, a comet shoot across the sky. It approaches the edges of the horizon, burns so bright that your eyes water, and it fizzles out into the sky. It is graceful, quick, and memorable.
It also describes the art of music; how it is created and where it comes from. It reminds me that there are those of us that walk the earth with such tremendous creativity, like lightning from fingertips. It is powerful, and I've been extra attentive to my playlists because of this novel.
And so, I leave you with my favorite quote from the book:
"Daisy: I had absolutely no interest in being somebody's muse.
I am not a muse.
I am the somebody.
End of fucking story."
