Part of Your World
A"fter a wild bet, gourmet grilled-cheese sandwich, and cuddle with a baby goat; Alexis Montgomery has had her world turned upside-down. The cause: Daniel Grant, a ridiculously hot carpenter who’s ten years younger than her and as casual as they come-the complete opposite of sophisticated city-girl Alexis. And yet their chemistry is undeniable. While her ultra-wealthy parents want her to carry on the family legacy of world-renowned surgeons, Alexis doesn’t need glory or fame. She’s fine with being a “mere”ER doctor. And every minute she spends with Daniel and the tight-knit town where he lives, she’s discovering just what’s really important. Yet letting their relationship become anything more than a short-term fling would mean turning her back on her family and giving up the opportunity to help thousands of people. Bringing Daniel into her world is impossible, and yet she can’t just give up the joy she’s found with him either. With so many differences between them, how can Alexis possibly choose between her world and his?"
Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez is an easy, beautiful read that I just couldn’t put down. My partner’s sister gifted me this one for Christmas and I feel quite seen with my infatuation with rom-com-esque novels. I love them so much, this one included. As someone who works with surgeons every day, some being of the older generation, I would say that Jimenez’s depiction of Alexis’ father is accurate. Too proud, too smart, and too good for compassion at times. I loved reading this fairy-tale. Daniel’s town provided solace for the both of them, a bubble away from reality that eventually became their real-life fantasy. The resolution to the conflict was clever, but not realistic. I doubt anyone who doesn’t work in healthcare would pick up on it, but I can tell you that a hospital system would not front a profit-free, widespread clinic. I’m sorry, but they wouldn’t. However, I acknowledge that this isn’t the narrative this novel takes on. It was still a wholesome ending, but I just had to add that. I enjoyed how Jimenez swapped perspectives every other chapter from Alexis to Daniel. I also love the portrayal of a medical dynasty and the tidbit about Taylor Swift inspiring her song “The Last Great American Dynasty” after this family. I adored that, and I hope that Taylor has seen it! Jimenez captured my heart with this one, I adored the fairy tale of it all; of a town choosing what it needs and whimsically interfering.
